Baby Signing & Toddler Talking with TinyTalk South Gloucestershire

Thursday mornings [see Timetable below]: Term Time [week commencing 12 September – week ending 19 December. No Class during Half Term 31 October]

Learn to communicate with your baby before they can speak, at an award-winning TinyTalk baby signing class.

What can you expect at a TinyTalk class?

Weekly themes such as bedtime, family or a trip to the park give you the signs you need to share baby’s world and daily routine, using British Sign Language (BSL)

An interactive music class featuring well-known nursery rhymes, action songs, specially composed music and instruments

Hands-on sensory activities delight your baby and develop all-round communication skills such as vocalising, listening and taking turns. They also stimulate your baby’s senses, encourage their tracking skills and develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills

Time to relax with a cuppa and make new friends whilst your baby enjoys social playtime

TinyTalk classes are run in blocks of 12 weeks, though you can often start at any time (subject to space). Each block covers the most important 50 core signs which we know will make a huge difference. Our classes do not repeat across a year and, as babies’ interests develop, so many families choose to return time after time. We cover 150 signs in all, and a few amazing babies have learned almost all of them!

TinyTalk is for toddlers too. Our quality classes continue to develop your child’s communication skills whilst you’re having a brilliant time together. It’s the TinyTalk you love, but more physical and interactive to suit developing minds. Toddlers are not meant to sit still!

Build toddlers’ speech development, confidence and social skills

Familiar TinyTalk action songs, stories and puppets your child loves

Learn a wider range of BSL signs and concepts such as counting and colours

Fun language games make communicating fun

Toddler Talking Classes are generally suitable from around 18 months, but talk to your local teacher about which class will best suit your little one.

Ecobrick Starter Workshop

Wednesday 29 October: 19.30 – 21.30

Want to take control of your unavoidable single use plastic? Learn about Ecobricking & how it can support local communities…

You are invited to an Ecobrick workshop hosted by Andrea Warner, certified UK Ecobrick trainer of the Global Ecobrick Alliance [GEA].

“The first Ecobrick you make is the most important, the best is the one you don’t have to make”

We all know there is a plastic crisis and we all want something done about it. We may have different perceptions of how that should happen, perhaps depending on our understanding of plastic, recycling and how its ultimate disposal actively affects our environment.

In this workshop, we will look at plastic in all its guises and consider how we use it, how we have developed a reliance on it and how, as our hands let go, its onward journey affects the air we breathe, soil we grow food on and in, and the fresh and salty water we know is so important to our lives.

At the end of the session you will have an immediate action plan for being part of this global change AND you’ll know how to make a high quality Ecobrick you can be proud of. We also hope that you have lots of fun!

*PRE-BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL * (You need to be able to stay for the full session)

Cost is £5.50 per person [with booking charge of £1.03]. Children [under the age of 12 years] are welcome & free.

If you can, please bring:
– a clean and dry 500ml plastic bottle [these are the easiest size to start off with]
– a favourite pair of kitchen scissors- a ‘pokey stick’ e.g. long handled wooden spoon

[We have both bottles & scissors available if you do not have your own]

If you would like to collect single use plastic & bring it along to the workshop [making sure it is clean & dry], then we can use it as examples of what does / doesn’t go in & how to prepare it & how to use it in your bottle to help achieve the ideal density / weight..

If you would have any questions regarding this workshop, then do get in touch with Andrea directly [].

If you haven’t yet, do join our FaceBook group: The Hive Community Space Ecobrick Project.

Feedback from previous Ecobrick Starter Workshops:

“Very well structured & balanced workshop..learnt things I didn’t know about plastics & have come away determined to reduce our plastic consumption.. thank you Andrea for providing food for thought….”

“Wanted to give Ecobricking a go, but got overwhelmed with all the technicalities. Andrea has broken that down & made it understandable & achieveable! Being able to have a go at chopping & stuffing a bottle whilst I could get help & reassurance was brilliant! Going home to get Ecobricking!”

“Even more determined now to eliminate the last of my single use plastics! Going to Ecobrick what I have & so pleased I can fill a bottle that is going to be used for a structure that will benefit a local charity!”

“So pleased that I attended this workshop! Now I know where I went wrong with the Ecobricks that I have tried to make at home! Those mistakes will not be repeated! It is so much easier when you can come to a workshop like this & learn all about it… much preferred to reading [& getting confused!] by everything that is online!”

“A very enjoyable evening & practical session.. non judgemental.. you are given facts as they are known. Your conclusions are your own. I’ve come away wanting to research more about our local recycling systems to understand what is best for our household & the environment. Supporting materials [including my own validated Ecobrick which I made in the session!] are great reference points & looking forward to the challenges of my Ecobrick journey!”

Refund Policy: Should you wish to cancel your place at this workshop, monies will be refunded up to 1 day before the event, noting that booking fees [£1.02 per adult ticket] are not refunded as per the terms & conditions set out by Eventbrite [so the booking fee is retained by Eventbrite & not the Organiser of the event]. It is permitted to transfer your ticket to someone else to attend the same event you were booked on too [& we appreciate it if you could let us know]. Please note it is not possible to transfer this ticket to a different event / day or time. No refunds will be provided if cancelled within 24 hours of the event start time or if you do not attend. Should this event be cancelled then all monies taken [including the booking fees] will be returned to the buyer.

Baby Weaning Workshop with Baby Bright Start

Saturday 09 November: 10.30 – 12.00

Research shows that the early foods that infants are exposed to can predict their longer term eating habits. Adopting the right approach now can make mealtimes a whole lot easier in the future, and ensure your child enjoys a broad range of foods.

This workshop, delivered by Registered Dietitian Carly Atkinson, is designed to answer all your weaning-related queries and make the introduction of solids a fun and enjoyable process for yourself and your little one.

Topics we will be covering include:

· What to introduce and when should we start?

· Stages of food introduction

· Responsive feeding styles that suit your individual baby

· Puree vs Baby-led approaches

· Commercial vs Homemade baby foods

· Choking vs gagging (and what to do)

· Establishing good mealtime habits and routines

· Nutritional needs and vitamin supplements for babies from 6 months

· Reducing the risk of food allergies

· Interpreting food labels

· Early approaches to avoid a fussy eater

Meal and Snack Ideas for different stages

We will;

· talk you through the latest evidence and advice and look at how this advice could work for you and your family, adopting an approach that suits your baby as an individual

You will come away with

· Ideas, skills and approaches for introducing solids to your baby

· A better understanding of your babies developmental and nutritional needs at this age

· Some useful handouts to help you remember the factual stuff and provide lots of practical ideas for mealtimes

You are welcome to attend with or without your baby. Partners are encouraged to attend as well.

This workshop is recommended for those with babies from around 14 weeks of age. A lot of the content of the workshop will still be useful even if you have already started weaning your little one.

Workshops are a maximum of 8 people and the price of £30 includes a hot drink, plenty of evidence-based information to take home and a goody bag. Please note that partners pay a concessionary rate of £5 which includes a hot drink (we envisage you being able to share the goody bag!).

Before purchasing a ticket for this event please ensure you have read and accept the Terms and Conditions for this event.

Please note that these workshops are based on general public health advice and should not be used as a replacement for seeking advice from a health professional for a clinical diagnosis. They aim to support the information you may already have received from your healthcare team rather than replace it. We actively encourage questions during the sessions but there will not be the opportunity to seek in-depth clinical advice as the workshops are delivered in an informal group setting.

With 13 years experience as a registered dietitian, and a mum of 2 small children herself, Carly Atkinson, who recently appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live discussing childrens’ sugar intakes, was keen to develop something for parents struggling with this difficult phase of parenting, and help prevent mealtimes becoming a battleground, or negative eating habits becoming a way of life.

The workshop is suitable for those with children aged 1-5 years of age. It is suggested you do not bring your child along as there is lots of information to take on board and they are likely to be pretty distracting for you!

Workshops are a maximum of 8 people and the price of £19.50 includes a hot drink and plenty of evidence-based information to take home.

Before purchasing a ticket for this event please ensure you have read and accept the Terms and Conditions for this event.

Please note that partners are very much encouraged to attend as a consistant approach to mealtimes is key, and pay a concessionary rate of £5.50 which includes a hot drink.
